History of the .44 S&W American Cartridge:
The .44 Smith & Wesson American, a.k.a. 44 S&W American was introduced around 1869 to 1870 for the Smith & Wesson Model #3 revolver and used by the U.S. Army between 1871 and 1873. Other revolvers were also chambered in this caliber by Merwin & Hulbert & Company.
