History of the 6.5-284 Norma Cartridge:
Ever since the .284 Winchester came out in 1963, private wildcat cartridge makers have been making wildcat cartridges from the .284 Winchester case, by necking up or down the case neck to accept a different size caliber or diameter projectiles.
One of the favorites was the 6.5mm diameter projectile, called the 6.5-284 Winchester Wildcat cartridge.
Basically a .284″ Winchester case necked down to 6.5mm or (.264″ Diameter, Caliber)which produced high velocities and flat trajectories, with the energy of a .308 Winchester. In 1999 Norma of Sweden submitted it to CIP (“Permanent International Commission for the Proof of Small Arms”) and it was standardized as the 6.5mm-284 Norma.
To me it will always be the 6.5-284 Winchester as it came from the .284 Winchester case. With velocities up to 3,200 feet per second and energy up over 2,800 foot pound per square inch this cartridge will out shoot the .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08 and the .260 Remington and other short action cases.
