History of Pinfire or Pin-fire:
The pinfire or pin-fire is metallic cartridge used in firearms, where the priming compound is ignited by striking a small pin that protrudes from above the base of the cartridge, unlike the Smith and Wesson Center-fire cartridge.
Invented by Frenchman Casimir Lefaucheux and patented in 1835, it has a small pin that would ignite the priming compound and initiate the firing process.
However, with the introduction of rim-fire and center-fire ignition cartridges and also due to the fact they loaded faster, the pinfire cartridge became obsolete by the 1860s.
