History of the .32 Smith & Wesson Short Cartridge:
This pistol cartridge was introduced in 1878 for the Smith & Wesson Model 1-1/2 hinged-frame, single action revolver.
It was loaded with black powder at the time of its introduction, but has been loaded with smokeless powder since 1940.
