One Cartridge, not a Box: .22 Hornet, by Winchester nickel plated case with red/purple dye on projectile and case base, loaded with a jacketed soft point, and a double charge of powder.

For more versions of this caliber, please see below in related items.

History of the .22 Hornet:
The 22 Hornet was developed in the late 1920s by Colonial Townsend Whelen and Captain G.L. Wotkyns for the Springfield Armory, using the older 22 WCF (Winchester Center Fire) black powder cartridge, and the new (for the era) smokeless powders to achieve higher velocity.
Winchester offered this caliber ammunition to the public in 1930.

History of proof Cartridges:
Proofs are used to verify or “proof” the mechanical strength of a firearm before it leaves the factory.
The bright dark reddish wash or dye on the base (head stamp) and projectile with nickel case is the U.S. industry standard of identifying these types of cartridges.
Proofs are not normally available to the public.
